Television was introduced in Fiji in 1995. At this time, only three percent of girls there reported they vomited to control their weight. However, three years later, fifteen percent of girls reported they acquired the same behavior. The culture in Fiji generally promotes eating healthy and looking robust, so this is considered a dramatic change in behavior for a culture that encourages the opposite (Corydon, 1). Another factor consider when looking at eating disorders caused by the media is that twenty years ago, models weight eight percent less than the average woman. Today, they weigh twenty-three percent less (Media-Awareness, 1). Sexualization is another effect the media has on young girls. An article by BBC News defines sexualization as â€Å"occurring when a person’s value comes only from her or his sexual appeal or behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics, and when a person is portrayed purely as a sex object. † Television shows such as Gossip Girl and other shows similar to Gossip Girl substantially consist of sexual content. A large percentage of the viewers of these shows are young girls who look up to the characters they see on television. When they see their role models dressing and acting the way they do, they want to do the same. One study found that adolescents who have seen a lot of media with sexual content were more than twice as likely as others to have had sex by the time they were sixteen (TIME). Furthermore, many songs heard on the radio appeal to young girls, but the lyrics are not suitable for them. Katy Perry’s hit song â€Å"Last Friday Night† acts as a quintessential example of this. Some of the lyrics say, â€Å"Last Friday night / We went streaking in the park / Skinny dipping in the dark / Then had a menage-a-trois†¦Ã¢â‚¬  The outfits Katy Perry wears in her music videos, at her concerts, and on her posters also contribute to the sexualization of young girls. In her â€Å"California Girls† music video she wore a provocative bikini-like outfit with cans attached to her breasts that were shooting out whipped cream. As a role model to many young girls, Katy Perry has the power to be very influential in their lives; however, it seems as though she is going about it the wrong way. The media can also influence many girls to start using drugs and alcohol at a young age. Similar to sexualization, drugs and alcohol are presented in many television shows and other forms of media. Young girls want to fit in with what they see in the media, so when they see their favorite characters on their favorite TV shows doing drugs they are likely to want to do the same. They are not doing it because they are interested in trying drugs and alcohol; they are merely doing it because they think it is the cool thing to do. Many magazines also have stories about celebrities going to rehab, getting belligerently drunk, etc. Although it is likely that an adolescent may stay away from a certain drug if they see their role model has had a negative experience with it, they are likely to do the drug if they don’t see any disadvantages to it. For example, a video of Miley Cyrus doing salvia went viral in 2010. It showed her hysterical laughing from the drug and hallucinating from it, making her think that her boyfriend was in front of her, even though he wasn’t. The video essentially made the drug look appealing. Being a Disney star, it can be debated that Miley Cyrus is even more of a role model to young girls than Katy Perry. If her young fans see her doing this, they are likely to want to follow. Commercials also influence drug use in adolescents. For example, the intention of beer commercials is to make beer look appealing. Jay leno was once asked why he does commercials for Doritos corn chips but refuses to do beer commercials. â€Å"You don’t see dead teenagers on the highway because of corn chips† was his answer (Singer, 415). In today’s society, the media affects young girls in many negative ways. It causes eating disorders, sexualization, and the use of drugs and alcohol. Seeing flawless women all over the media lowers the self-esteem of the average girl, which can ultimately lead to disorders such as depression, bulimia, and anorexia. Television shows and songs with provocative material encourage adolescents to behave more suggestively. This includes dressing and acting provocatively and taking part in the use of drugs and alcohol. There is something that should be done about these detrimental effects of the media, possibly teaching children about understanding how the media works or decreasing the accessibility of explicit content to children. Is it really possible to prevent adolescents from being exposed to such content as much as they are? Will the effects of such content get worse in the future? These are questions to think about as the media not only affects our society today, but it will affect societies and generations to come. Ernst Junger â€Å"Storm Of Steel† When writing the story, Junger believed the war was an â€Å"incomparable schooling of the heart† (249). He thought that his war experience made him stronger. He claimed that the war was a great lesson he learnt as he learned more about human nature. He saw that men possessed a great will which led them to victory. When Junger asked one soldier about the situation, the latter told him of the horrible noise, shells, guns, messed trenches and corpses (Junger 250). The soldier also said that it was always difficult to understand what was what (where the enemy was, where English troops were). This description did not differ from what Junger and his men had to experience in trenches some time later. The war affected all in quite the same way. Men were shocked and disoriented. Many did not know what to do. Even Junger, who had to lead his men, was not always sure in what was right and what really should have been done. Junger depi cts the picture of a town devastated by the war (250). He tells about partly destroyed houses, corpses everywhere. Many people died in that war (military people, civilians, children). He also mentions gardens where fruits rot as there are no people to collect the fruits. When reading the last lines of the story it is quite difficult to state that it is an antiwar novel as the author states that he is proud of soldiers who are committed to give their lives to achieve some goals. This is good, because it will push humanity towards previously unimaginable possibilities and achievements.Perspec tive Two: Removing geographic boundaries from commerce means that the right people can be chosen for the right jobs at the right price. Job Changes Fewer and fewer people are staying with the same job their entire lives. In the United States, the average person will switch jobs more than 10 times in over the course of his/her life. Some workers will make lateral, or even downward, moves in order to increase personal fulfillment. Others switch jobs in an effort to obtain the highest possible salary. Increasing personal autonomy is generally seen as a sign of progress, but what happens when length of experience is replaced with variety of experience? As the number of jobs people will hold over the course of their lives continues to climb, it is important to examine the implications and meaning of this trend for our lives.Perspective One: Because jobs are no longer a lifetime commitment, people will feel freer to accept a greater variety of positions. This increase in breadth of experience will in turn make job applicants more attractive to future employers. Perspective Two: As the frequency with which people change jobs increases, the loyalty of people to their employers will decrease. This in turn will lead to more fractured company cultures, as employees will only care about what’s best for them.Perspective Three: The disappearance of the stigma associated with frequent job switching will allow employees more leeway with employment decisions. Increased autonomy will lead to increased happiness and job satisfaction.Write a unified, coherent essay about the increasing frequency with which people switch jobs. While you'll see many different topics asked about on the ACT essay section, there is in fact only one ACT Writing Prompt (and three types of perspectives) you have to know. We call these the Core Question and Core Perspectives. This question (and these perspectives) will run through each and every ACT Essay prompt you'll get. The Reasoning Behind The Core Question As you can see, all the ACT writing prompts are about how the world (and the people in it) is (are) changing. All of them boil down to the following question: "What are your views on how humans are changing the world?" or, even more broadly, "What do you think about the way the world is changing?" The ACT frames its prompts this way because ACT, Inc. wants to choose essay topics that all students can have an opinion on, rather than asking about something extremely specific for which some students are more prepared than others. Rather than asking about high school life (as the old ACT Writing prompts did), the current ACT essay prompts ask students to consider how changes in the world today affect all humanity, forcing the students to place the issue in a broader context. While the topics may appear to be highly specific at first glance (e.g. "intelligent machines"), the explanatory paragraphs for each prompt make it clear that the topics can be parlayed in a number of different directions (and be accessible to most people). There won't be prompts about issues that mainly affect urban dwellers (e.g. subways), or only affect certain geographic areas (e.g. snow preparedness). Similarly, something like "smartphones," for instance, would never be a topic on its own; rather, it would be an example that could be used for the topic (as with the "intelligent machines" prompt). When writing the ACT essay, it really helps to have strong opinions about the core question ("What do you think about the way humans are changing the world?"), but if you don't, no problem: it's easy to develop opinions! And we're here to give you a head start. In the next section, we're going to give you three basic opinions related to the core ACT essay question. We'll show you how to apply these perspectives to specific prompts and tell you where you can find examples to support them. The Reasoning Behind The Core Perspectives The new ACT prompt has three different perspectives that you need to discuss during the course of your essay. To figure out the three core perspectives, I read and re-read the perspectives for all three of the official prompts, considering them in light of the informational paragraphs that preceded them. I ended up with these three basic opinions: Core Perspective A: The changes caused by [Prompt topic] are not good and have negative results. This perspective maps onto Perspective 1 of the first official ACT sample prompt above, Perspective 2 of the second official sample prompt, and Perspective 3 of the third official sample prompt. My nickname for this position is "conservatism," since this perspective wishes to be conservative and not change things. Core Perspective B: The changes caused by [Prompt topic] will lead to greater (in)efficiency. This perspective maps onto Perspective 2of the first official ACT sample prompt above, Perspective 1 of the second official sample prompt, and Perspective 2 of the third official sample prompt. My nickname for this position is "utilitarianism," since this perspective is all about what will be more practical and lead to the greatest good for the greatest number of people (this is even explicitly spelled out in Perspective 1 of the second official sample prompt). Core Perspective C: The changes caused by [Prompt topic] will yield positive future results because it will lead to improvements for all humanity. This perspective maps onto Perspective 3 of the first official ACT sample prompt above, Perspective 3 of the second official sample prompt, and Perspective 1 of the third official sample prompt. My nickname for this position is "progressivism," since this perspective argues that change = progress = good. Building a Support Bank Now you know that the ACT essay will only ever ask you to discuss one question: "How is the world changing?" If you prepare for this question with diverse evidence before the test, you'll be ready to answer the prompt no matter what it is. To give yourself the most time to write and organize your argument, your thesis should match up with one of the three perspectives given- that way, you won't have to take the time come up with a fourth, completely new perspective and compare it to at least one the three perspectives the ACT provides. But it gets better! The internet (and society in general) is chock-full of theories and arguments about how the world is changing, and whether or not that's a good thing. All you have to do is read up on some of them and develop your own opinions. Opinions on the World Your ACT essay thesis should basically be one of the three perspectives, but you have to support that opinion with evidence- the answer to the question "why?" (or "why not"?). Look over these sets of three opinions and try to think of reasons or examples to support each. The world is changing to be worse than it was before. (because...) The world is changing to be better than it was before. (because...) The world is changing to be more (in)efficient than ever before. (because...) Research and Brainstorming Ideas Unlike with the SAT essay, you can use abstract reasoning to develop your point on the ACT. This means that you don't necessarily have to come to the test pre-loaded with specific examples: if you can't think of a concrete example that will support your point, you can make one up as you go along while constructing your argument. Now we'll look over a few sample internet resources that could serve as support (or brainstorming assistance) for the opinions above. You can use the general ideas from these resources, but you may also find some useful specific examples for when you face your real ACT Writing prompt. Autism Spectrum Disorder There are many different definitions for the term special education. An effective definition for special education is that its specialized instruction that students with disabilities are entitled to receive as articulated in IDEA, (Friend, M). There are many different disabilities that can entitle a student to special education. Students are entitled due to learning disorders, mental retardation, physical disabilities, and also disorders such as autism. In this paper I will discuss doctors, schools, and educators that has had made a difference in the life of a student with autism. Born, February 18, 1906, Hans Asperger was an Austrian pediatrician that published the first definition of Asperger’s Syndrome in 1944. Asperger did a study on four boys and acknowledged a pattern of behavior and abilities that he called â€Å"autistic psychopathy†. The word autistic means self and psychopathy means personality disease. According to Asperger, the pattern included a lack of empathy, little ability to form friendships, one-sided conversations, intense abruptions in a special interest, and clumsy movements. Children with Asperger’s Syndrome had the ability to discuss their favorite subject in great detail and for that reason Asperger often called them â€Å"little professors†. Asperger passed away October 21, 1980, before the identification of this pattern of behavior became widely recognized. Today, technology plays a major role in the life of a student with ASD such as the software Mind Reading, which helps them cope with the disorder ASD and learn different skills daily. Mind Reading is a software that covers the entire spectrum of emotions, and is suitable for the ages of 5 through adult hood. Using the software can help a student explore over 412 emotions, allowing them to hear the emotions by six different people. Mind Reading also provides context, there are 2472 faces, voices, and stories about emotions. Mind Reading is inexpensive for its value. Parents can purchase Mind Reading for $129 for the DVD that contains the emotions library module, games zone, and learning center modules. This DVD can also be run on computers. Mind Reading software can be helpful to a student with ASD in a classroom, by helping them learn their emotions and how to cope with them. Aside from the Mind Reading software, there are also different institutions that are helpful to students with ASD and tend to their emotions. There are places such as the New England Center for Children that’s available to students with ASD. NECC has twenty-five years of practical experience. Located in Massachusetts, it is accessible to students with ASD from all over. NECC has a commitment to respectfully provide high quality educational services, and to help each student to reach his or her individual potential and to lead a productive and independent a life as possible. NECC offers several services such as academic, speech and language therapy; development of social and life skills, vocational training, physical education, occupational therapy, family services, outreach services and health care. Independence is strictly emphasized at NECC. There are schools such as Heartspring that serves children with various disabilities as well as schools such as Pacific Autism Center for Education that has residential group homes. Parents may prefer to send their children to a school that serves children with ADS versus an inclusion classroom, because their needs are specifically identified at a school for ASD. Inclusion classrooms are great for social skills but it can cause confusion when it comes to there needs being met. Schools are not the only supporters of ASD; there are also several agencies that serve students with ASD. Bernard Rimland founded the Autism Society of America (ASA) in 1965. ASA is dedicated to increasing public awareness about autism and the day-to-day issues faced by individuals with autism, there families and the professionals they interact with. ASA and its chapters share a common mission of providing information and education as well as research and advocating for programs and services for the autism community. An important service that ASA provides is valuable peer support. Peer support is valuable because it brings together parents and families who are dealing with the same emotions as the others; rather they are joyful or painful. Overall, I believe that if Hans Asperger was still alive today he would be actively involved in the different organizations and agencies providing services for students with ASD. The study that Hans Asperger did has increased in knowledge and if he was still alive today he would have contributed to the study done and correct the assumptions done by society. If Hans Asperger could send a message to me a future professor, it would probably say to be patient with the students with ASD and to take the time to try and understand them. Hans story has inspired me as a future teacher because he watched two young children and noticed something different in them. With what he noticed he did a study and found interesting facts that nobody else ever noticed.
